From Alcoholism to Alignment: My Road to Graduation

Last weekend, I walked across the stage at the University of Virginia and received my master’s degree in Education, Curriculum, and Instruction with an emphasis in Social and Emotional Learning. I’m 53 years old. And until recently, I might’ve told you it was “no big deal.”

I said exactly that, in fact, to one of my dearest friends, Kealani, when she announced she wanted to fly in from Costa Rica to see me graduate. “It’ll be like a ten-second walk,” I told her, “it’s not a big deal.” While I’m always up for a visit from this amazing woman, I was baffled that she would go to such lengths for what, in my mind, was just another checkbox on a long, zigzagging path.

That’s when she stopped me and said something that cracked me open:

“You’re always downplaying these major accomplishments. This is a big deal.”

Reframing the Story

I suppose I had good reasons to shrug this off. My high school graduation was a mess—literally. As a teenage alcoholic, I wrecked a car at 2 AM the morning of the ceremony. I showed up to St. Mary’s Church in Old Town Alexandria with two black eyes and a dislocated hip. I couldn’t walk across the stage to receive my diploma. When it was over, I hobbled out of the church and went straight to the ER.

College was no straighter path. I attended eight universities over 25 years, while mixing in a music career, getting sober, having children, and launching a socially responsible business that employed people recovering from homelessness and addiction. That business ran for 22 years and helped change many lives—including mine.

So yes, I’ve zigzagged. I’ve stumbled. I’ve paused. But I’ve also grown.

And I’ve arrived.

The Wind Beneath My Feet

What helped me not just keep going, but heal and thrive, is Vedic Meditation. It didn’t erase the past, but it softened the sharp edges. It didn’t hand me a map, but it whispered, keep going—there’s peace ahead. This practice became the wind blowing at my back, nudging me forward on the road of fulfillment, success, and happiness.

Where I once braced against the world, now I rest in it. Where I once struggled for direction, I now glide in alignment.

Vedic Meditation didn’t just support me in finishing a degree—it redefined what success even means. It’s not about how fast you go or how clean your transcript is. It’s about who you become on the way.

And I have become someone I’m proud of. Someone my friend is proud of. Someone worthy of being celebrated.

What I’m Really Celebrating

This graduation is not just a piece of paper. It is the culmination of a lifetime of integration—of pain, passion, reinvention, service, and deep rest. It is proof that transformation is not only possible, but profoundly beautiful, even after 50.

I’m celebrating that I didn’t give up. I’m celebrating the meditation that helped me stay centered through it all. I’m celebrating that I now have the tools to support others—students, educators, and fellow human beings—in healing and thriving.

If you’re curious about how meditation can help you access that kind of inner stillness, you might enjoy reading this post on the heart of mantras or how to overcome common challenges in meditation practice.

A Message to You

If you’re reading this and something inside you is stirring—pay attention.

Maybe you’re like me, 53 and ready to reinvent yourself. Maybe you’ve checked all the boxes and still feel like something’s missing. Maybe you’re relatively content, but feel the cracks where a deeper rest could pour in and change everything.

If you’re ready to succeed—not just in the way the world measures it, but in truly becoming happy—reach out to me.

Let’s talk. Let’s meditate. Let’s take your next step together.

Vedic Meditation has been the wind at my back. It can be the wind beneath your wings.

With love and gratitude,
Meg Reynolds
