Let’s Talk About the Practice That Changes Everything

So, you’ve heard of Vedic Meditation, and now you’re curious (or maybe just a little skeptical). Totally normal. With all the wellness trends floating around, it’s hard to know what’s legit and what’s just another “good vibes only” fad.

Here’s the deal: Vedic Meditation is not a fad. It’s a 5,000-year-old technique that has quietly transformed the lives of busy humans like you and me. And unlike some other practices, you don’t have to force your mind to “go blank” (thank goodness, right?). Instead, you’ll learn how to let the personalized mantra I will give you naturally charm the mind into a state of rest deeper than sleep.

Hi, I’m Meg Reynolds, a Vedic Meditation teacher who’s been exactly where you are—curious, skeptical, and maybe a little overwhelmed. But I promise, this isn’t about being “good at meditation.” It’s about letting go, showing up, and seeing what happens.

By the end of this post, you’ll understand precisely what Vedic Meditation is, how it works, and how you can get started (no apps or yoga mats required). Let’s do this.

“Wait, What Even IS Vedic Meditation?”

Great question! If you’re picturing monks in robes on a mountaintop, I get it. But here’s the truth: Vedic Meditation is for everyone—busy professionals, parents, creatives, night owls, early risers, and even people who “can’t sit still.”

At its heart, Vedic Meditation is about letting the simple technique transport your mind to it’s least excited state. You’re not forcing it. You’re not “clearing your mind.” Instead, you’re using a mantra—a simple sound that you easily, effortlessly repeat (kind of like a background hum)—to guide your mind inward. This mantra isn’t something you “think about.” It’s something you let gently exist in the background, like the hum of a distant fan.

And guess what? You’ll be surprised by how naturally it happens. Your mind will drop into that deep, cozy rest state—like when you accidentally fall asleep on the couch during your favorite show. Except, this time, you’re still aware.

“But Isn’t Meditation Just About Clearing Your Mind?” (Spoiler: Nope.)

If you’ve ever sat down to “meditate” and immediately found yourself thinking about grocery lists and weird high school memories, I have good news: You’re not doing it wrong.

There’s a huge myth that meditation means “controlling your mind.” Vedic Meditation throws that idea out the window. In this practice, your mind is allowed to think. In fact, it’s expected to think.

Here’s the secret: When you use your personal mantra (that sound you repeat silently in your mind), your thoughts naturally start to fade into the background. It’s like when you’re driving on a scenic road and suddenly realize you’ve been daydreaming for 10 minutes. Your mind does that on its own, without effort.

You don’t have to “clear your mind”—you just have to show up. The rest happens naturally.

“How Is Vedic Meditation Different From Other Kinds of Meditation?”

If you’ve tried mindfulness or downloaded a guided meditation app, you might be wondering: Why do I need another type of meditation?

I hear you.

But here’s the difference:

  • Mindfulness: Focus on the breath. Stay present. Gently bring your mind back when it wanders. (Effort required.)
  • Guided meditation: Follow along with someone talking you through a mental journey. (Effort required.)
  • Vedic Meditation: Use a mantra, let go, and let your mind settle naturally. (No effort required.)

With Vedic Meditation, you’re not “focusing” on anything. You’re letting the mantra do all the heavy lifting. It’s like letting a gentle current carry you downstream. You’re not paddling. You’re not swimming. You’re just being.

“I’m Not a Monk, I’m Busy. How Much Time Does This Take?”

I get it. We’re all juggling a lot. But here’s the thing—Vedic Meditation fits into your real life.

The recommended practice is 20 minutes twice a day. One session in the morning, one in the evening. Before you roll your eyes and say, “I don’t have 40 minutes to spare,” let me ask you this:

Check your screen time on your phone. Could you spare 40 minutes there? How much time do you spend overthinking, worrying, or rehashing old conversations in your head?

If you have 20 minutes to scroll Instagram, you have 20 minutes to meditate. And here’s the twist: once you experience the mental clarity, focus, and energy that meditation brings, you’ll WANT to make time for it.

And if you can only do one session a day? Then contact me and I will help you strategize when to fit in the second meditation. Each meditation is burning off accumulated stress and if you aren’t burning stress off faster than you are collecting it, you may be doing some extra heavy stress release in your one meditation a day. Don’t worry, this isn’t uncommon and yes, some meditation is better than no meditation, but I am confident that we can devise a plan that will make the second session fit into your schedule!

“Am I Too New to Meditation to Learn Vedic Meditation?” (Hint: No.)

If you’re brand new to meditation, you’re in the perfect spot to learn Vedic Meditation. Unlike other methods that expect you to sit perfectly still and “focus,” this technique embraces you exactly as you are.

When I learned Vedic Meditation in November of 1996, I had just come out of a cabin in the woods with no running water in Alaska, where I had been trying to “simplify my life” after spending 5 years in the L.A. music scene as a studio singer and three years in San Francisco’s corporate banking world. My life was so nerve-racking that I decided to leave it all behind and “get back to nature.

It was a really extreme step to take to calm myself down and guess what, it didn’t work. As beautiful and remote as my life in Alaska was, I still carried all of my previous anxiety and restlessness around in my nervous system. My year in the woods didn’t work to flush the gunk out of my nervous system. And, I didn’t think I could handle another dark, -25 degrees Fahrenheit winter.

So, take it from me: there’s no “prerequisite” for learning. You don’t need to know how to meditate. You don’t need to be “spiritual” or “good at sitting still.” In fact, most of my students come to me feeling like they “just aren’t cut out for meditation.”
Spoiler alert: They’re all meditating on day 1!

(Ready to learn with me? Here’s where to start.)

“How Do I Actually Get Started?” (This Is Where It Gets Exciting.)

Okay, so maybe at this point, you’re thinking, “This sounds great, but how do I start?”

Here’s how it works:

  1. Sign up for a course. (Yes, this is different from a free app.)
  2. Learn the technique with a teacher (that’s me!). You’ll receive your personal mantra (like your own secret key to calm).
  3. Practice with guidance. Over a few days, you’ll learn how to meditate on your own, no app required.

Here’s the thing—this practice is for life. Once you learn it, you’ll never “unlearn” it. It’s yours forever.

Final Thoughts: You Don’t Have to Be “Good at Meditation” to Do This

If you’ve read this far, there’s a part of you that’s ready for something new. Maybe you’re tired of feeling stressed. Maybe you’re tired of overthinking everything. Or maybe you just want to feel more calm, clear, and in control of your day.

I promise you—this practice will meet you where you are.

You don’t need to be a “good meditator.” You don’t need to be “spiritual.” You don’t need to change who you are to feel the benefits of Vedic Meditation.

All you have to do is show up. I’ll help you with the rest.

If you’re ready to take the next step, I’d love to guide you. Join me for an introductory course where you’ll get personalized guidance, your own mantra, and everything you need to start meditating like it’s second nature.

If you have questions, I’m here. Drop me a note, ask me anything, and let me know what’s on your mind. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just start.
