With so many apps, online courses, and self-guided programs, you might be wondering, “Why bother with an in-person meditation class?

It’s a fair question. Meditation apps are convenient, inexpensive, and available 24/7. But here’s the truth: No app can do what a teacher can.

An app can’t adjust your practice, answer your questions, or offer encouragement when you feel like you’re “doing it wrong.” But a teacher can.

In-person meditation classes offer something that no app ever will—personalized support, real-time guidance, and the chance to feel the power of shared energy.

If you’ve only ever tried to learn meditation through an app, it’s worth considering the experience of learning from a real person. In this blog, I’ll walk you through 4 key reasons why in-person classes are a game-changer for your meditation journey.

1. Personalized Instruction and Feedback

Am I doing this right?” With a teacher, you’ll never have to wonder.

If you’ve ever tried to learn meditation on your own, you’ve probably asked yourself, “Is this working?” That question can linger in your mind, making you doubt yourself and lose momentum.

When you learn meditation in person, that uncertainty disappears. You’ll get personalized guidance from a real teacher (like me) who can give you clear, direct answers in real-time.

What Personalized Instruction Looks Like

  • Your Own Unique Mantra: In a Vedic Meditation course, I give you a mantra that’s unique to you. It’s not a “one-size-fits-all” mantra like you’d get from an app. This personalized approach allows the practice to work more effectively for your mind and nervous system.
  • The Mantra is 15% of the Practice, but the TECHNIQUE is 85%: The technique of meditating effortlessly can only be transmitted nervous system to nervous system by a trained, qualified teacher. Don’t short-change yourself with a method of meditation that was designed by AI or is facilitated electronically. It won’t help you reach your subtlest state of mind…the place from where the bliss bubbles up.
  • Live Adjustments: If you’re unsure if you’re “doing it right,” I’m there to support you. If your mind feels too busy, or if you’re worried that you’re not “focused enough,” I’ll remind you that thoughts are part of the process.
  • On-the-Spot Clarifications: Have a question mid-session? Ask. There’s no confusion, no guessing, and no DIY troubleshooting.

When I learned Vedic Meditation, I had my fair share of questions, too. I remember wondering, “How do I know if I’m using the mantra right?” My teacher’s calm reassurance over the four-day course made all the difference. I asked many questions before and after each meditation and became a self-sufficient meditator by the end of the course. That’s the power of having a guide.

2. Building a Supportive Meditation Community

Because meditation doesn’t have to be a solo journey.

Sure, you can meditate alone and enjoy all the joy of eliminating stored stress from your body. But if you seek to be in community with other meditators, attend group meditations and come away on retreat with me!

There’s a sense of comfort and camaraderie that comes from being surrounded by people on the same journey as you. Everyone is there for the same reason—to learn, grow, and find calm in their lives.

Why Community Matters for Meditation

  • Accountability: It’s easier to stay consistent when you know you’re showing up for a group.
  • Support & Encouragement: When you hear other people share their meditation experiences, you realize you’re not alone in your joys and struggles.
  • Lifelong Connections: Many of my students have formed lasting friendships with people they met in my classes. It’s a beautiful, unexpected bonus.

What It Feels Like

Picture this: You’re sitting in a room with 8-10 other people, eyes closed, hearts open. Everyone is practicing together, and you can feel the collective stillness in the room. The energy is palpable. This is something an app will never be able to replicate.

This is the feeling of belonging to a community—a safe space where you can show up as you are, without judgment.

If you’re someone who craves connection or just wants to be around others on a similar path, an in-person course is for you.

3. Deepening Your Practice on Retreat with Group Energy

Why does meditating on retreat feel exponentially more powerful?

If you’ve ever attended a live concert or group yoga class, you know how different it feels from listening to music or doing yoga on your own at home. That’s the power of shared energy.

The same is true for meditation. When you practice on retreat, you are catered to with nourishing Ayurvedic meals provided for you, in a beautiful and comfortable setting. Advanced knowledge is shared on retreat, and electronic devices are put aside (but you can check if necessary) to ensure that the purification and normalization of your nervous system is unimpeded. We call meditating on retreat industrial strength stress release!

Why Group Energy Feels Different

  • Amplified Stillness: When multiple people meditate in the same space, the stillness feels deeper. It’s almost like you’re “borrowing” from the calm energy of others.
  • Shared Presence: Knowing that others are meditating alongside you creates a collective sense of presence and connection.
  • Less Resistance: Many say they can go deeper into their meditation when practicing with others. There could be other reasons for this: 1) You know that you don’t have to rush off right after meditation to work or any other obligation. 2) You are under the care of a qualified teacher who will be your go-to person for all your questions or with whom you can share an experience. 3) If you often feel distracted or restless during solo meditation, meditating in a group can help you work out the kinks in your solo practice. You’ll notice that group meditation can make your solo practice feel easier.

These are some reasons I host regular group meditation events for my students. It’s a chance to come together, experience that shared energy, and enrich your practice.

4. Transitioning from Classes to Personal Practice

How in-person classes prepare you to meditate on your own (for life).

After you finish an in-person meditation course, you won’t need to rely on anyone else—not me, not an app, and not a video. You’ll know exactly how to meditate on your own.

Unlike some practices that require constant “refreshers,” Vedic Meditation is a self-sustaining practice. Once you’ve learned the technique, it’s yours for life.

Here’s How It Works

  • 4-Day Course: I teach you over four days, step-by-step. Each day builds on the one before.
  • Personalized Guidance: Every question you have gets answered. By day 4, you’re meditating confidently on your own.
  • Lifelong Support: I’m here for you long after the course ends. You can attend group meditations, retreats, or check in with me anytime.

It’s like learning how to ride a bike. Once you’ve learned, you never forget.

If you’re wondering how this approach compares to using an app, I encourage you to read my post on “Stress isn’t Supposed to Be Your Default Setting”. It explores how meditation works with your nervous system to create long-term change.

Ready to Experience It for Yourself?

If you’re ready to experience meditation with a real teacher (not an app), I invite you to join one of my in-person Vedic Meditation courses. Here’s what you’ll walk away with:

  • Your Own Personalized Mantra (not a one-size-fits-all version)
  • A Clear, Simple Method (that you can do on your own, for life)
  • A Supportive Community (you’ll never feel like you’re “figuring it out alone”)

Apps are great for reminders and timers, but they can’t teach you the way a teacher can. In-person learning gives you clarity, confidence, and calm—not confusion.

If you’re curious about what it’s like to learn in person, I’d love to connect.
